Florence Mine
Florence Mine is the last Deep Iron Ore Mine in Western Europe and can be found just South of Egremont in Cumbria.
The Red Iron Ore has become the distinctive colour of the mine, its buildings and the people who work there.
Iron Ore mining has taken place around this area for a very long time, but became more serious and industrialised in 1830.
Many mines were opened and eventually closed leaving Florence as the only working mine left in Western Europe.
The mine has only a few miners still working, but they produce ore and Heamatite for the annealing industry, products for the cosmetic industry and high quality minerals.
